Beenleigh’s story starts in 1884, when the SS Walrus, a steamboat carrying a copper still, washed up on a sugarcane property on the Albert River. Local cane growers put the still to work making spirit from their own sugarcane, and the distillery has stayed on that riverside site ever since. It holds Australia’s oldest registered distillery licence and is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. The rum is made from sugarcane molasses supplied by a local family-owned mill, with rainwater from the property, then distilled in copper and matured in barrels.

Taking the rum through oak before filtering gives it a rounder, softer texture than an unaged white rum, while the filtration keeps it clear and clean so citrus, mint and fruit can lead in the glass. It suits home bartenders who want an Australian white rum with a long history behind it for everyday cocktails.
