Finding the Right Bottle

Reposados rest in oak for a few months, giving you smooth vanilla notes without losing the agave character. Herradura Reposado 700ml is a solid example. Anejos age longer and drink more like a sipping whisky. The Clase Azul Reposado 200ml is a premium pick if you want to try one without committing to a full bottle, and Herradura Anejo rewards slow sipping. For cocktails, El Jimador Blanco works well in margaritas, and Jose Cuervo Tradicional Silver is a crisp, all-agave blanco.

What's the difference between reposado and anejo?

Reposado tequila is aged in oak for two to twelve months, giving gentle vanilla and caramel notes. Anejo is aged for one to three years, which brings a deeper colour and richer, more whisky-like flavours. Blanco is unaged or rested briefly and tastes most of fresh agave.

What is 100% agave tequila?

100% agave tequila is made only from the sugars of the blue Weber agave plant. Mixto tequila can include up to 49% other sugars. Look for "100% agave" on the label for a cleaner, more authentic agave flavour, as with Herradura, Don Julio and Clase Azul.

What tequila is good for margaritas?

A blanco tequila is the classic choice for margaritas because its fresh, peppery agave flavour stands up to lime and orange liqueur. El Jimador Blanco and Jose Cuervo Tradicional Silver are popular options. A reposado gives a slightly smoother, rounder margarita.

How should I drink tequila neat?

Sip good tequila neat at room temperature from a small glass, such as a copita or tulip glass, rather than shooting it. Reposado and anejo tequilas suit slow sipping, and in Mexico tequila is often served alongside sangrita, a spicy tomato and citrus chaser.
