Black Barn was founded in 1994 on the north-facing slopes above Havelock North. For this rosé, selected parcels are hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed, settled overnight and then fermented separately in stainless steel with an aromatic yeast. The parcels are blended and stabilised, and the wine is then carbonated for its sparkle rather than fermented a second time in the bottle. That approach keeps the focus on bright, fresh fruit rather than toasty, yeasty notes.
Black Barn’s own tasting notes:
Nose: Fragrant red berry fruit.
Palate: Off-dry, with a creamy, lively sparkle and balanced acidity that gives length.
Finish: Moreish and refreshing.
Black Barn lists this rosé alongside its NV Brut, and the rosé is the softer, fruitier choice of the two. It suits anyone who finds bone-dry sparkling a bit sharp and prefers a little sweetness, and it is a good pick for a relaxed lunch, a picnic or a summer barbecue. If you usually drink still rosé, this is an easy step into bubbles.
Serve well chilled at 6 to 8°C in a flute or white wine glass. The touch of sweetness works with lightly spiced Thai dishes, prawns, cured ham or a fruit platter. It is made to drink young, so enjoy it within a year or so.
