Bulleit Bourbon is a Kentucky straight bourbon with a high share of rye in its mash bill, which gives it a spicier, drier style than many bourbons. It is bottled at 45% ABV and comes from the Bulleit Distilling Co. in Kentucky.

Tom Bulleit launched the brand in 1987, basing it on a recipe linked to his ancestor Augustus Bulleit, a nineteenth century tavern keeper. Bulleit opened its own distillery in Shelbyville, Kentucky, in 2017. As a straight bourbon it is made mostly from corn and matured for at least two years in new charred American oak, with no added colour or flavour allowed. The extra rye is what sets it apart: where wheated bourbons lean soft and sweet, Bulleit has more pepper, cinnamon and dry oak. The tall, flask-style bottle with its raised lettering is easy to spot on a back bar.

Expect vanilla and toasted oak up front, a firm rye spice through the middle and a clean, dry finish that does not linger on sweetness. That balance is why it works so well in mixed drinks.

Bulleit is a practical bourbon for home cocktails. Use it in an Old Fashioned, Whiskey Sour or Manhattan, where the spice cuts through sugar and vermouth, or keep it simple with ginger ale and a wedge of lime in a tall glass with ice. Neat or on a big cube, it suits barbecue, pulled pork and grilled corn. A 700ml bottle gives about 23 standard 30ml pours.
