De Kuyper began in 1695, when Petrus De Kuyper and Anna Custers opened a cask-making workshop in Horst, in the south of the Netherlands. Their son Jan turned the family to distilling in 1752 with a distillery in Schiedam, and the company’s present Schiedam distillery has been running since 1911. Queen Beatrix gave the firm its Royal designation in 1995, marking 300 years. Its liqueur range is built largely around cocktails, and banana is one of its fruit crèmes.

Crème de bananes is a sweet liqueur, not a cream liqueur, so it has no dairy and keeps well in a cool cupboard after opening. In mixed drinks it pairs naturally with rum, pineapple, coconut, chocolate and cream.
