Edenvale makes a full wine first, then takes the alcohol out using vacuum distillation, a low-temperature process designed to keep as much of the wine’s fruit character as possible. Retail ingredient lists show about 94% de-alcoholised wine and 6% grape juice concentrate, with the usual preservatives. The result is a crisp, lightly fruity sparkling with a wine-like feel, rather than a sweet grape juice. Edenvale has specialised in alcohol-removed wine since 2006, with a range that covers sparkling, white, rosé and red.
The piccolo holds 200ml, about one and a half standard flutes, which is handy when only one person wants a glass and there is no need to open a full bottle. It suits designated drivers at a celebration, a toast at a work function, a picnic or a lunchbox treat, and anyone cutting back who still wants something festive in the glass. If you need a full bottle for a group, the same wine is also made in 750ml.
Keep the piccolo in the fridge and serve it well chilled, at about 4 to 6°C, in a flute. Open it just before pouring, as small bottles lose their fizz quickly once opened. It works with seafood, sushi, light salads, soft cheese and fruit platters. Because it is low in alcohol it is made to drink fresh, so open it by the date on the label.
