The 1783 on the label is the year the brand says Evan Williams opened Kentucky’s first distillery, on the banks of the Ohio River. Each batch is drawn from fewer than 200 barrels and uses bourbon aged up to eight years, longer than the minimum the law asks for, which gives it more depth than the standard Black Label. The mash bill is 78% corn, 12% malted barley and 10% rye, a classic corn-forward recipe.
Evan Williams describes it as:
Nose: Oaky vanilla, buttery notes and sweet corn.
Palate: Semi-sweet and oaky, with honey.
Finish: Lean and off-dry.
It is a sensible trade-up for anyone who drinks Black Label and wants a bit more richness for sipping, without a big jump in price. The brand features it in its Evan Sour, a balanced whiskey sour, and it also handles an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan well. Sip it neat or over a large cube in a rocks glass. Try it with barbecue pork, glazed ham or a pecan pie.
