The GlenDronach, in Aberdeenshire’s Valley of Forgue, is mostly known for rich sherry-matured whiskies made from unpeated barley. This bottling adds a gentle layer of peat smoke to the mix. Starting in bourbon casks gives vanilla and honey, then the sherry finish brings dried fruit and spice. The smoke is soft and dry, closer to a smouldering bonfire than to a heavily peated Islay malt, so it supports the fruit rather than covering it.
The GlenDronach describes it as:
Nose: Ripe gooseberries, citrus and cinnamon sugar with delicate peat and charred wood.
Palate: Oak spice, heather honey and barley sugar with subtle peat and a hint of bonfire.
Finish: Drier peat with gentle embers of smoke.
It is a good bridge for sherried malt fans curious about smoke, and for smoky whisky drinkers who want more fruit. Try it neat, with a splash of water, or over ice. It makes a lightly smoky highball with soda and a twist of orange. Pair it with barbecued pork, smoked cheddar or a dark chocolate tart.
