The Glenlivet was founded by George Smith in 1824 in the glen of the River Livet, on the edge of the Cairngorms. Distiller’s Reserve belongs to the Triple Cask range, a set of Glenlivet malts made for travel retail, which is why you mostly see it in the larger 1 litre format. The three casks are balanced so that none takes over: the American white oak brings soft vanilla sweetness, the ex-sherry wood adds a little dried fruit and spice, and the traditional casks keep the light, fruity Glenlivet spirit in the middle. It carries no age statement.

The Glenlivet’s own tasting notes:

Nose: Ripe pear and soft fudge.

Palate: Fruity pear flavours with a spicy kick.

Finish: Marzipan and fresh hazelnuts.

It is an easy, gentle malt, so it works neat, with a splash of water, over a large ice cube or topped with chilled soda in a tall glass. Pear tart, fudge or a nutty hard cheese all make good partners. The 1 litre size gives you about 33 standard 30ml pours, handy for a household that shares a bottle or for hosting.
