Collection replaced Roederer’s long-running Brut Premier, and the number on the label tells you which edition you have. Every edition is built on one main harvest, then filled out with wine from the house’s perpetual reserve, a blend topped up year after year, plus a smaller share of reserve wine aged in large oak casks. That reserve system is what gives the wine its creamy, slightly toasty depth while keeping it fresh. Louis Roederer was founded in 1776 and remains in the hands of the Rouzaud family.

A half bottle pours two generous glasses or three small ones, ideal for a quiet night in, a picnic or a gift with a box of chocolates. It also chills much faster: about an hour in the fridge or 15 minutes in an ice bucket. Serve at 8 to 10°C in tulip glasses with oysters, prawns or a plate of fried snacks. Drink half bottles within a year or two of purchase, as the smaller format ages faster than a 750ml.
