Description
Southern Comfort Whiskey is a sweet, fruit and spice flavoured whiskey from the USA, sold here in a handy 200ml bottle. Its owner, the Sazerac Company of New Orleans, labels it a spirit whiskey with natural flavours.

The recipe goes back to 1874, when New Orleans bartender Martin Wilkes Heron started mixing whiskey with fruit and spices to make a smoother drink. For a long stretch of its later history the brand was made on a neutral spirit base. Sazerac bought Southern Comfort in 2016 and brought whiskey back into the recipe, which is why today’s bottle says whiskey on the front. It sits between a straight whiskey and a liqueur: sweeter and softer than bourbon, with orange, stone fruit and warm spice running through it.
Southern Comfort describes the Original as smooth and satisfying with a touch of sweetness, and the brand pitches it as a relaxed, easy sipper rather than a serious dram.
The 200ml size is about six to seven 30ml pours, which makes it easy to take to a barbecue, a picnic or a bach weekend without carrying a full bottle. The brand’s own serves include Southern Comfort over ice and Comfort and Cola. It also mixes well with lemonade and a squeeze of lime, or ginger ale, in a tall glass with plenty of ice. For something sharper, shake 45ml with fresh lemon juice and a little sugar syrup for a quick sour. Serve chilled with barbecue ribs, fried chicken or a slice of pecan pie. Keep it sealed and out of direct sun.
