Spiced Maple was one of the two flavours ThunderDonk launched with, after about 18 months of development at the Scapegrace distillery beside Lake Dunstan, near Cromwell. It is made in small batches. Of the range, it is the one with the most whisky character showing through: toasted oak and spice sit alongside the sweetness, where Salted Caramel goes fully dessert and Campfire Coffee leans on espresso. That makes it a good bridge for whisky drinkers who want something sweeter, and for liqueur fans who want more warmth. The 200ml size is a sensible way to try it.

Palate: Rich, caramelised maple sweetness with warming spice, toasted oak and a subtle cinnamon kick.

Pour it over a large ice cube, or stir it with hot water, lemon and a cinnamon stick for a quick toddy. Topped with ginger beer and a squeeze of lime it makes an easy long drink. On the food side, try it alongside pancakes with bacon, pecan pie, apple crumble or a cheeseboard with aged cheddar. Store it upright in a cool, dark place.
