Single grain means the whisky comes from one distillery and is made from grain, such as wheat, rather than only malted barley, usually in a column still. Cameronbridge is a large grain distillery in Fife, and most of its spirit ends up in blended Scotch. Haig Club bottles it on its own. Clubman was the first permanent addition to the Haig Club range, which launched in 2014, and it takes its name from a 1922 Haig advertising campaign. Where the original Haig Club uses three types of cask, Clubman uses ex-bourbon American oak alone, keeping it simple, sweet and easy to mix.
Expect a light, clean grain whisky with vanilla and soft toffee from the bourbon wood, a little fruit and a gentle spice on the finish. It is lighter in body than most single malts, which is the point: it is built for mixing and casual pours rather than slow study.
The serves suggested for Clubman are simple: neat, over ice, with cola, or with apple juice and a slice of fresh ginger in a tall glass. It also works in a Whisky Sour or a highball with soda. Serve it with barbecue, burgers or a sticky toffee pudding. A good pick for anyone curious about grain whisky who wants something easygoing.
