The brothers founded their Martinborough craft distillery in 2015, bringing together backgrounds in engineering and winemaking. Their aim was to challenge the idea of what a classic gin should be and to showcase New Zealand’s own flora. Before settling on a recipe, they spent two years foraging around the country for aromatic native plants that would sit well alongside a traditional dry gin. Kawakawa, manuka and horopito made the final cut. Each batch is hand crafted and distilled in a bespoke copper pot still. Native Gin sits in a range that also includes a Zesty Lemon Gin, the Rev. Dawson Gin and a barrel-aged gin.
Reid + Reid’s own tasting notes:
Nose: Juniper and floral notes, followed by citrus.
Palate: Peppery, with ginger-like spice.
Finish: Vibrant and aromatic.
That peppery lift from the native botanicals makes it a good bottle for anyone who wants a gin with a clear New Zealand accent, and a handy gift for visitors from overseas.
Serve it in a G&T with plenty of ice, a quality tonic and a twist of lemon or orange to pick up the citrus. It also makes a lively martini or gimlet. At the table, it sits well with fresh seafood, lamb, and dishes seasoned with herbs or a little pepper.
